AirTree Pioneers with KIC Steph Claire Smith & Laura Henshaw

KIC'd off the morning being inspired by female founders who've built a profitable business, encouraged millions to take control of their health, and made a huge impact on the wellness industry.

AirTree launched its Pioneers community in Melbourne this morning by showcasing what's possible for female founders. A huge thanks to Jess Walker for such an epic first event!

Here are my top takeaways that Kic co-founders Laura Henshaw and Steph Claire Smith shared with the other early-stage founders and operators in the room:

How do you get started when there's so many options and overwhelm?

"You don't have to be perfect to start." - Steph said that they started with an ebook back in 2015, which then grew to an online community and now an app. The many spelling mistakes their mums found in the ebook after they launched are proof that you don't have to be perfect to get started.

What makes their friendship and partnership work as co-founders?

They've got the same goals for the business, and they've got deep respect for what the other can bring to the business. They also have excellent communication and can support each other when the other isn't feeling confident or strong. And they now have clear roles and responsibilities, so it's easy to know who makes decisions about what.

Tips for hiring and leading a team?

When you're hiring people to join your team, make sure you have very clear job descriptions, role responsibilities, KPIs, and ways of working within your culture. Because people are unpredictable, this clarity takes the emotion out of performance.

How do you maintain resilience to keep going?

"It's great to have others believe in you, but it's even better to believe in yourself. When you are feeling down, know who your cheerleaders are and go to them when you need a pick me up.”

Plans for expansion and growth?

One of their first convos with investors was a bit confronting. They were asked that, because they're both the face of their business, what's their business plan if the worst happens and they both get hit by a bus? While using your personal brand can be excellent for your business, you've still got to think bigger than yourself and have a dream for the business beyond yourself.

I absolutely love their example of ethical leadership, honesty in business, and carving your own path.
